On September 14, 2022, the China Pacific Island Countries Dialogue and Exchange Meeting on Climate Change was held in Beijing. Xie Zhenhua, Special Envoy for Climate Change Affairs of China, exchanged views with envoys from seven Pacific island countries in China, including Tonga, Fiji, Micronesia, Solomon Islands, Kiribati, Samoa and Vanuatu, on policy actions to address climate change, the outcome expectation of the 27th United Nations Conference of the Parties (COP27), South South cooperation on climate change, etc. Heads of relevant departments and bureaus of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Ecology and Environment attended the meeting.

    The Chinese side said that China attaches great importance to tackling climate change, implements the national strategy of actively tackling climate change, and through a series of policy measures such as adjusting the industrial structure, saving energy and improving energy efficiency, optimizing the energy structure, and developing renewable energy, it has exceeded the 2020 action target of controlling greenhouse gas emissions ahead of schedule. China strives to achieve carbon peak by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060, which fully reflects China's responsibility as a responsible big country. China has always actively and constructively promoted the multilateral climate process, and is willing to work with Pacific island countries to jointly promote COP27 to be a conference with implementation and action as the theme, and to achieve positive results on issues of greatest concern to developing countries, such as adaptation and financing. China is willing to further support island countries in tackling climate change through cooperation in building low-carbon demonstration zones, implementing climate change mitigation and adaptation projects, and carrying out capacity-building training. China plans to hold another training course for climate change officials and technicians from Pacific island countries in the near future, and will hold a high-level forum on South South cooperation on climate change during COP27, sincerely inviting Pacific island ministers to attend.

    The envoys highly appreciated China's actions and achievements in actively tackling climate change, thanked China for providing valuable support to Pacific island countries in tackling climate change, and were willing to further strengthen dialogue and coordination with China to jointly make positive contributions to promoting the multilateral climate process.
